Reviews
Excellent Chinese food for a reasonable price.
The Chinese cooks are the "real thing". You can tell for the flavoursome taste of the dishes. One of the restaurant's staff from the restaurant efficiently took our order served us promptly.
The place is small with a nice and cosy atmosphere.
I recommend it for a quick bite if you are short of time.
Beef noodles and dumpling nice, ja jiang noodles serving was too big that it can feed 5. We couldn’t finished.
The noodles are handmade and chewy but when you had too much and feel stuffed, it doesn’t taste as nice.
Dumplings on the other hand is worth ordering, juciy and big.
Authentic chinese food served here. But some dishes can be abit too salty. Should be able to communicate with front desk next time before order. Cozy environment and the staff is really friendly too :) various option to choose from the menu as well. Recommended :)
Great food! We had: Cumin Lamb Noodles, Braised Beef Noodles & Xinjiang Noodles. Cumin & Xinjiang are spicy.
Cheap and cheerful, that’s the best way to describe this place. Food has always been good, nothing fancy or master chef worthy but tasty. The braised eggplant is my all time favourite, I’ve been going to this place for years and every time I would order this dish without fail. There are 2/3 restaurants next to each other but I always go to the one in the corner towards the uni.
2024 - no longer good - new management - gone from excellent food to bad food and slow service - pity - we enjoyed this since 1991 - looks like the old guy has sold and the new management is not up to speed as of January 2024 so we've stopped going.
2023 I see the confusion continues - as people have added reviews here for up to FOUR different restaurants with similar names - 3 facing Quay St and 1 facing Thomas St on the other side courtyard of the Prince Centre. My reviews are for QG14 the middle unrenovated one facing Quay St.
Fried dumplings were on point today - beautifully crispy bottom, pork garlic chives filling, just right with a half spoon of the provided chili, soy sauce and vinegar. Happy tummy.
if you order a noodle dish and hear a loud BANG!!! from the kitchen, that’s your handmade noodles coming up.
when you don’t want hot (temperature) food try the spicy shallot [cold] beef salad small $10 (see my pic) - tasty - rinse the chili oil off your lips with the free oolong tea
10/8/22 new menu with new opening of second same name restaurant next door south towards Broadway (not the corner nearer Paddy’s Market - looks like the original owner is back - the violinist?! 🎻
27/4/21 there are two identical-named restaurants side by side facing Quay St - used to be same owner but now separate and no longer the same food or cooks - so there is a lot of confusion between these two neighbours as I only see one site showing in Google Maps.
and that’s even without the confusion over similarly but slightly differently named restaurants at the rear of the block/in the next street/same building but facing Thomas St ... I’m reviewing the unrenovated middle one at QG14 - second from the corner of the lane - not the newer looking lane-corner one at QG13 - interestingly the March 2021 Google Streetview pic of both shows the same name in English and Chinese - but Shop 14 owner assures me there are different owners now and probably since 2017 - so different food baby !
I've only eaten at Shop 14 - the second from the corner since the corner Shop 13 was renovated and the food didn't taste so good to me anymore then. It may have changed since COVID. My older reviews to 2019 were for the corner Shop 13 now renovated - my reviews since 2020 are for the middle/unrenovated Shop 14.
19/3/21 2 grilled lamb skewers the best I’ve had here - juicy - I ask for no chilli as it’s damn tasty already dusted with cumin - these days I try a different dish every time and they’re always good and interesting - we eat here at least once a fortnight - rubs tummy
15/1/21 beef and shallot filled pancake about $7 and freshly made dumplings hit the spot for me for lunch - my partner said a bit salty but it was just right for me
29/9/20 North Chinese food - this name, shop number 14, address, review is for the one facing Quay St, second from the corner of Thomas Lane - https://goo.gl/maps/X7n94ek6DP9LvEYPA - [not the one shown in most pix here showing shop TG2 Chinese Noodle House facing Thomas St] - this does char-grilled lamb skewers (better than next door on the corner which deep fries them so you only taste the oil)
the two side-by-side restaurants with the same name on the street awning used to be owned by the same guy who used to play his violin out the front but he sold and they are now two separately run restaurants - tho' you do still see staff running between them occasionally.
Cold sliced beef with julienned shallots is good but comes covered with chili oil - you have been warned - feel the burn ! (lotsa cupsa tea...)
Try the wrapped pancakes - warm soft flat bread around chicken or beef, cooked beansprouts and egg - pretty satisfying - 3 dishes was too much for us 2 people at lunch today so we took the leftovers home.
I ordered the BBQ lamb skewer ($4 each) and the pork and cabbage dumpling 12pc ($13.80). The food is freshly made to order and does take about 20mins to cook. Taste is good and condiments are self service on the table.
Food is not bad but could be better:
1. Noodles seem overcooked and not as chewy as other "handmade" noodles restaurants I have tried.
2. The eggplant is also overcooked, so we barely eat that because of the burnt smell.
